DJ Cut Chemist: The Audience's Listening

The Audience’s Listening is a product of a Los Angeles native who’s lived in the bustling metropolis for all of his 33 years. It’s what’s shaped his sound and diverse outlook, his playfulness and his edge (as camouflaged in sweetness as it may be). It is also evocative of an era when sound enthusiasts put out records for the adventure of it, not just as a vehicle tied to hit singles and booty-shaking videos. Using a turntable, mixer and computer to create the songs, it is an homage to all that is musically possible from the fingertips of a gifted DJ and imagineer.

“Everything on the album was uncharted territory, something I’ve never done before. The only thing that’s worth doing is exploration.”

Two new tracks from Cut Chemist's (formerly the DJ/Producer of Jurassic 5) upcoming Warner Bros Records release, The Audience's Listening

We miss you, Dilla.

It's been a little over a month, since the hip-hop community was left without one of its genius producers and the loss still stings. I see the honorary shirts being worn and the memorial pics on the web communities still being displayed as icons. I feel the beats that much harder, now. In the back of my mind, thinking, we didn't get to listen to his original work long enough. Talib Kweli presents his own thoughts on the man in a very personal way, for all to see, at his official blog. Pictured, is the first page.

Be on the Look Out...PUMA 5X12 Vinyl Box Set 2006 @ WMC

Staying true to the philosophy that good music needs to get to good people, PUMA has dropped it's 2006 edition of the 5X12 box set to be unleashed at this years gathering of DJ's in Miami. Originally launched in 2004, the PUMA 5X12 box set was created with the intention of helping cutting-edge record labels promote and market exciting music while contributing something of lasting value to DJ culture. This year, PUMA has returned to produce another 1000 sets which feature diverse and rare cuts by exceptional talent such as Prince Language, Simian Mobile Disco, and Ge-ology, just to name a few. The series is known for providing some great new tracks all in a killer package and this year's 5X12 is no different. But for this year's concept, PUMA goes back to basics and puts the emphasis on the most important thing...the music. Past 5X12 artists included the likes of Jaylib, Chromeo, The Juan Maclean, Matthew Dear and Pete Rock. So if you happen to be in Miami, do your best to try and find a way to get your hands on this set. This may be your last (and only) chance to get in on what some folks have called in the past "the best thing to come out of this conference."

"Murs is better than your favorite rapper."

LA native and underground legend, Murs, of Living Legends and Mystic Journeymen, is set to release his new album Murray's Revenge on 3/21. This is the official follow up to his 2004 release Murs 3:16, a "below the radar" classic. On this, his sixth album outing, Murs returns with indie super producer 9th Wonder on the boards. Expect some more heartfelt, relateable, and deft rhymes from the Mid City kid, accompanied by some old soulful production from "9th." Oh and yeah, I stand by the quote above. And if you haven't picked up Murs 3:16 yet, here's your official "late pass," now go out there and get it. I promise that you won't be disappointed. Well, maybe you will--but it won't get back to me.

DJ Green Lantern Presents: "Impeach the President"

It's been a minute, since the days of Public Enemy and "Fight the Power." Ironically, it seems that the political era that P.E. was rocking the mic in, which provided them and other "conscious" artists so much creative fodder, has seen an eerie return. Just as a review, let me see... a US war in the Middle East, a slumped economy and growing deficit, a president named George Bush, and a natural disaster that was none to flattering to the administration. Hmmmmn. Are we talking about the late 80's and early 90's? No. We're talking about the present day. Sadly, hip-hop's collective social consciousness hasn't caught up or is it that it hasn't backtracked?--to the times of it's more vocal past. Regardless, here are some cats that are paying attention. Presented by Eminem's former DJ and newly signed "Russell Simmons Music Group" artist, DJ Green Lantern, with the help of Dead Prez, Just Blaze and others, here's some new "old school," audio reminiscence:

Sergio Mendes-Timeless

SERGIO MENDES, the legendary Brazilian artist who brought “Brasil ‘66” to America 40 years ago, has impacted the charts again with his new album TIMELESS, released February 14 on Concord Records/Starbucks Hear Music. The album entered the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart at #44, selling over 27,000 copies in its first week.
For the album, produced by and featuring of the Black Eyed Peas, SERGIO and will brought in some of music’s biggest artists, each a Sergio fan, to contribute to various tracks, including John Legend, Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, Black Thought of The Roots, Chali 2na of Jurassic 5, Jill Scott, Q-Tip, india.arie and Justin Timberlake, among others. The collection includes interpretations of SERGIO’s classic repertoire along with new songs, mixing Brazilian melodies with contemporary hip-hop sounds, described by the New York Post as a "blend of Brazilian pop and urban music stylings works so seamlessly, you have to wonder why it had never been mashed before (2/12/06).”

In other SERGIO news, a June 25 performance at the Hollywood Bowl has been set to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Brasil ’66, the groundbreaking album that helped introduce Brazilian music to America. That album included the international smash hit “Mas Que Nada,” which is included on Timeless, with SERGIO and the Black Eyed Peas reinterpreting it for 2006. Special guests from the Timeless album will be on hand (exact artists TBA) to celebrate and perform songs from SERGIO’s legendary career.
