The Squid and The Whale

Relationships. They're our greatest universal challenge, other than survival. And most would say that you need good relationships to achieve survival. If that's true, then why are we so bad at them? Communication, that's why. In select theatres and on DVD now, The Squid and the Whale is a funny, honest, nuanced look, at just this issue and the lack of it in a relationship. Set in 1980's New York and examining the breakdown of a marriage between writers, the film rings true with all of the interpersonal dynamics and issues that develop between two people in a dissolving marriage, with the added flair of writers' language, and two children who are old enough to fully grapple with the gravity of the situation and their own growing up.
