The ghosts are here, red white and blue...

If you're in for some late 80s post-punk, melodic indie music go check out Bloc Party. Yeah I know, I know. Although they've been getting play on a local LA alternative station, they've been around for who knows how long. Sucks to know that you have to hear about good indie music like this on a mainstream station. Anyway, it's been stuck in my car forever and I can't seem to throw in any other CD at the moment. It's really that great of a CD.

"The English live on an island, have national radio, and they had the Smiths and the Stone Roses. As a result, they're less embarrassed than Americans to dream of indie guitar bands commanding decent audiences. That's part of what Bloc Party frontman Kele Okerere seems to have in mind when he describes this album as "Technicolor." He means it has big sound, big hooks, energetic performances, ambition-- all the things that make rock bands sound skilled and confident...Read full review.

What is the concept for this album?
The concept for the Insomnia mixtape is showcasing a day in my life, and all
the things that I'm responsible for, as a husband, father, educator, emcee,
and community leader. Basically I don't get much sleep, thus the title
INSOMNIA! This project features collabos and exclusives from my next album,
"While You Were Sleeping", which will come out as soon as I get some proper
fu$%ing distribution!!

Describe your musical style, who influenced you?
All of our hip hop legends, too many to name here, but also a lot of the
other cats like Mos, Common, Beanie Sigel, Jay, Nas, Wu-tang, Outkast, De La
Soul, Jaydee, Madlib, MF Doom. Everybody!

Describe your general stlye, what influences you?
Life experiences, conversations, politics, sex, other artists, beats,

Dot dot dot.(fill in the blank)

I love to... ROCK CROWDS

Hip Hop overseas is...APPRECIATED MORE THAN HIP HOP IS IN THE STATES

Hip hop in the states is...OVERSATURATED

Besides hip-hop, I listen to...JAZZ, REGGAE, WORLDBEAT, SOUL MUSIC, AND
OCCASIONAL RnB RADIO BULLSHIT

Production vs performing..I PREFER PERFORMING

Right now I am working on MY ALBUM, A DISTRIBUTION DEAL, AND ENTERING A
DOCTORAL PROGRAM AT UPENN THIS SUMMER

To ease my mind I INHALE AND EXHALE

I collect...COFFEE MUGS FROM EVErY CITY/COUNTRY I'VE TRAVELED TO

The shoes on my feet are...MOST LIKELY NEW BALANCE

My favorite city to perform at is..AMSTERDAM, HOLLAND

Every weekend I...REST AND MAKE SOME TIME FOR MYSELF

The weirdest thing that ever happened to me/us during a show was when...IN
VIENNA, AUSTRIA THE POWER KEPT CUTTING OUT ON ME DURING MY PERFORMANCE,
UNTIL FINALLY ON MY LAST SONG I THREW THE MIC DOWN AND FINISHED MY LAST SONG
SCREAMING AT THE CROWD WITH NO MIC.

The city of WASHINGTON, DC has the hottest girls. (Ask anybody!)

Michael Jackson is...A TORTURED GENIUS, and HOPEFULLY FOUND NOT GUILTY

ASHERU...before you catch some ZZZzzz's

INSOMNIA Vol. 1: The Official Mixtape from the LP While You Were Sleeping
http://www.asheru.com/

Asheru (a.k.a. Black Moses), of the Unspoken Heard (Seven Heads Entertainment), has been hard at work on his forthcoming solo project. This project is entitled While You Were Sleeping, and it’s obvious that Asheru was in the lab during the wee hours, while all are sound asleep, putting together over 20 plus tracks of pure genius. This album is heat from the opening track all the way to the very end. He has fused together an excellent combination of dope beat production, collaborations with up and coming and established artists, and his own lyrical expertise.

As for the mixtape aspect, DJ Roddy Roc does a descent job of transitioning from cut to cut, and does not over due the typical East Coast mixtape steez of yelling over every break or song (sorry RR, but I wasn’t feelin’ your mix from track 14 to 15). He also rocks some clean doubles throughout the tape and doesn’t take away from the star of the show, Asheru.

So back Asheru. I am actually looking forward to picking up his solo LP so that I can enjoy each cut at full length. His production kept me hooked in anticipation of the next song, and the creativity behind his lyrics deserves a big thumbs up. He is truly taking his underground status to another level. Without a doubt, several of his cuts could breakthrough to the mainstream, such as artist like Mos Def and Common who have been embraced by the masses.

As the Asian store owner said in Menace to Society, “…Hurry up and buy…”, and don’t sleep on this album While You Were Sleeping (pun intended).

Holla!!!

Hollertronix

T5 Soul Sessions, Volume 2
http://www.hollertronix.com/

For their installation of T5 Soul Sessions, Diplo and Lowbudget dug out an ancient mix of an old shoebox in the attic. Circa 1985, this tape (the very first unedited Hollertronix demo), speaks volumes on the underground 80’s deejay scene. The young duo went on to play a crucial role in the downtown scene, with their consistently tight drops of unheard new-wave album cuts and b-sides responsible for breaking numerous crucial tracks stateside.

This is truly an eclectic mix of various genres of music, from new-wave to funk to new age electronica. The Hollertronix duo can be labeled as pioneers in their unique brand of music. Their blend of smart samples and obscure old school tunes, makes this mixtape and interesting one for the ears. Although I’m used to hip hop music, I was actually absorbed into the entire mix.

Keep an open mind, this one is worth checking out!!!

L.A. Hip Hop Radio Battle

This is definitely an intense Hip Hop air wave battle. Read on and see if you believe it or not...

Los Angeles, CA - Just when things could get no worse for Emmis Communications over Tsunami remarks only a few weeks ago from one of it's leading urban radio stations in New York (Hot97), information has sparked the industry over allegations that it's Los Angeles based radio station, Power 106 FM, is attempting to squeeze and place pressure on artists in an effort to pull marketshare from all-new radio station KDAY (93.5 FM - Redondo Beach, CA), which has seen skyrocket ratings over it's fresh and new format since the stations debut only a few months ago.
According to a Los Angeles based web site, Power 106 FM radio personalities are placing pressure on artists by issuing private statements to artists that say, "If any artist records radio promos for Julio G or grants KDAY on-air radio interviews, that artist's records will be immediately removed from Power 106 rotation."
Actual names which have surfaced in regards to using the private statements include Power 106's DJ Felli Fel and the Goodfellaz, according to the post.
With Power 106 FM and 92.3 KKBT previously dominating the urban and hip-hop airways over the last several years in Los Angeles, it has been the re-emerging of the late KDAY which has sparked huge pressure by not only returning back to the L.A. airways after more than 10-years, but the fact that KDAY was the first radio station in the nation back in the early 80's to play hip-hop music on a regular basis. Thus making it a station pioneer as the first hip-hop radio station in the nation.
All New KDAY radio personality Julio G, who was also a former dj at 92.3 KKBT Los Angeles, is accredited as being one of the original members of the legendary KDAY radio team along with the likes of Greg Mack who was known for his back-then legendary show, " The Mack Attack".
It was only a few years ago that Julio G had been been working at The Beat with his popular evening show "West Side Radio" until he was suddenly removed from his position due to company restructuring and re-organization.
Since then, not only did KDAY bring back Julio G in what has been deemed as a partial reunion, but the station also brought back long-time runners the Baka Boyz, who were not only the leading radio personalities for Power 106 FM during the mid to late 90's, but also the two radio jocks who were responsible for the station's high ratings during Power 106's peak timeline.
Official spokesmen at KDAY could not be reached prior to press time, but upon Hiphopdirectory.com staff contacting the all-new KDAY station, an immediate representative from the station did respond with what appeared to be a not-surpising demeanor upon hearing about the demands being put on artists by competitive station Power 106.

Defari + Babu = Likwit Junkies

Los Angeles based artists Defari of Likwit Crew notoriety (home to The Liks, King Tee, Xzibit) and DJ Babu of Dilated Peoples and Beat Junkies fame have teamed to release their self-titled debut, The LJs, on March 22nd 2005 via ABB Records.

What finally brought these two together after a decade long friendship? "It was kind of an accident" jokes Babu. "We'd both focused on our own projects and we never had the chance to work together." After remixing "Behold My Life" for Defari's sophomore release Odds and Evens, they soon realized their musical chemistry. Since then, they spent time in the studio recording the album around their crazed work schedules. The final result is this new hip-hop duo. It presents classic hip-hop with a contemporary edge combining the raw energy of Babu's beats and Defari's gritty and sober lyrics in what is sure to be a ground breaking album this year.

The 15-track CD is produced entirely by DJ Babu, executive produced by the Likwit Junkies (and ABB president Beni B), and features guest appearances by Rakaa Iriscience ("Dark Ends") of Dilated Peoples, sultry L.A. vocalist Noelle ("L.J.s Anthem"), Planet Asia ("One Time"), plus a few more. The lead single "One Day Away" is already generating attention at radio, a video for the single is in the can, a national tour is in the works, and record release parties are being held in Los Angeles and San Francisco in late March.

Edan-beauty and the beat (lewis recordings 2005)

Edan-beauty and the beat
Originally uploaded by solebrotha.
For those of you who are familiar with Edan's work, you know that he is a music lover to the fullest. His previous works, Mic Manipulator and Primitive Plus have demonstrated his independent nature and innovative production techniques. This still holds true on Beaty and the Beat. With familiar hip-hop samples, 16-bit video game samples all arranged with a 70s funk drum kit, you can't go wrong. "Funky Voltron and Torture Chamber are perfect examples of the complex musical recipe Edan serves up. Edan is bascially a one-man-band. Behind the boards and behind the mic, Edan's passion is reflected in his work by producing the album himself. It seems that these days you just have to do it yourself to get it done right. K-OS-Joyful Rebelion (Astralwerks 2005)

Its funny how things come into fruition and how the world works in general. I was first turned on to K-OS watching snowboard videos of all things. Few weeks later, I made sure K-OS was on my iPod for my snowboard trip to Whistler, BC. In Whistler, I saw a flyer for a show, guess who was performing....K-OS. Couldn't make the show since it was sold out. A few months later, I'm at the K-OS & Handsome Boy Modeling School Show in LA. K-OS has done nothing but surprise me and if anything provide a sense of tranquility. This album does just that, the best thing is that you can always play back the track that gives you that conscious feeling. The show was truly a musical experience, wherein almost every member in the band played more than one instrument. By the way, ITF (International Tunrtablist Federation) Candian Champ, A-trak's friendly rival and Nelly Furtado's former dj, Lil Jazz is now playing the turntables and keyboards for K-OS. Now thats a jouful rebellion!! Joyful Rebellion is in stores now. Check kos_album
