Three Extremes screening this Saturday at midnight

An omnibus of Asian mystery tales, inspired by the desire of three film-makers in three different countries - Korea, Japan and Hong Kong - to collaborate on a project which would appeal to audiences who wish to step into the minds of these directors. Each story deals with the most mysterious of emotions. Divided into 3 segments: Cut, Box, and Dumplings – this project explores the possibilities of terror from three different perspectives

Those of you into Asian cinema should come check this out. I've seen bits and pieces, and it's a pretty interesting film. As part of the VC film fest, it's only going to be shown once at 11:55pm at the Laemmle Sunset Theatre this Saturday 4/30. See you guys there.

The end of analog TV?

The end is near and it may be time to go buy yourself an HDTV. I came across this interesting article on MSN.

"Depending on the outcome of discussions in Congress, television as we know it may end at exactly midnight Dec. 31, 2006. That’s the date Congress targeted, a decade ago, for the end of analog television broadcasting and a full cutover to a digital format. If enforced, that means that overnight, somewhere around 70 million television sets now connected to rabbit ears or roof-top antennas will suddenly and forever go blank..."

More like 3 strikes...instead of Triple X

XXX – State of the Union
http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/triplex2/

Starring: Ice Cube, Samuel L. Jackson, Scott Speedman, Willem Dafoe
Directed by: Lee Tamahori
Genre: Action/Adventure
Duration: 1 hr. 34 min.
Release Date: April 29th, 2005 (wide)
MPAA Rating: PG-13 for sequences of intense action violence and some language.
Plot: Darius Stone, a new agent in the XXX program, is sent to Washington, DC to
diffuse a power struggle amongst national leaders.

I have to admit that I had not seen all of the first XXX, but after seeing the lack of interest by people to see this sequel for FREE, makes me wonder if this will be a watch in theatre, wait for video, or wait for TV kind of movie.

First off, there were all types of free food, drinks (even alcohol), candy, and most importantly free beer...I mean the free movie. Even with all of the freebies, they theatre was less than a ¼ filled.

The film started off ok but as it went on, the overall premise turned out to be lame. The poor attempt at humor was similar to those cheesy late eighties and early nineties Schwarzenegger one-liners. Some of the CGI was bad; especially some of the bullet train scenes and when Cube was chasing the train on the tracks (with the tires shredded off) at speeds of over 200mph…give me a break man. On a brighter note, the movie was filled with cool gadgets and phat rides. It was action packed from start to finish and I truly was not bored, wack plot and all. For entertainment value, this movie was not bad.

As for the acting, I wasn’t convinced that Ice Cube fit the tough guy super-duper navy seal role. He did not have as much edge as Vin Diesel, but I’m not saying that VD is good at acting. What happened to VD anyway, being a babysitter (The Pacifier) pays better than being in the XXX series? Throughout most of the movie, I thought the head NSA agent was that dude from Can’t Buy Me Love, but it was actually that Ben guy from Felicity (my old roommate used to watch it). This guy was a little over-the-top, so maybe Patrick Dempsey (CBML guy) could have played a more convincing part. Then there was Willem Dafoe, playing the bad guy in the movie. All I could think of was, “What’s the Green Goblin doing in this flick?” and then later into the film, “When is Spider Man going to come into frame to save this film?”.

Overall, I rate this 3 out of 10.

Palindromes in theaters now

Todd Solondz's latest film Palindromes is playing in theaters now. Haven't gotten a chance to see it yet, but it should be an interesting film to check out since he's been away for a while.

PALINDROMES is a fable of innocence: 13-year-old Aviva Victor wants to be a Mom. She does all she can to make this happen, and comes very close to succeeding, but in the end her plan is thwarted by her sensible parents (Ellen Barkin and Richard Masur). So she runs away, still determined to get pregnant one way or another, but instead finds herself lost in another world, a less sensible one, perhaps, but one pregnant itself with all sorts of strange possibility.  Like so many trips, this one is round-trip, and it’s hard to say in the end if she can ever be quite the same again, or if she can ever be anything but the same again.

Jonze does Sendak

If you were exposed to Maurice Sendak's Where The Wild Things Are, you're in for a treat because it's being made into a film by director Spike Jonze. Although this news is kind of old and it is unsure whether the project is still being pursued, IMDB shows that it is still in pre-production. Let's hope this falls through.

Jared Hess directs Postal Service music video

For those who enjoyed Napoleon Dynamite and like The Postal Service, go check out the We Will Become Silhouettes music video. Although it doesn't star Uncle Rico or Pedro, director of Napoleon Dynamite Jared Hess managed to capture a similar aesthetic feel. If that isn't enough for you, Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley does a cameo with two children as backup singers. Fans should find it entertaining.

Freestyle:The Art of Rhyme Documentary

Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme is a work in-progress film that explores the world of improvisational rap--the rarely recorded art form of rhyming spontaneously, or "off the top of the head." Made over the course of more than seven years, mostly with borrowed or stolen cameras by a co-operative of students, b-boys, DJs, and MCs know as The Center for Hip-Hop Education, Freestyle takes the viewer on a journey through the previously unexamined dimensions of hip-hop as a spiritual and community based art form. DVD scheduled to be released May 24th.

Chris Cunningham at it again

Create a hyperactive shape shifting child who's been locked away in a basement and then score the short to music by Aphex Twin and what is the result? A short seven minute film titled Rubber Johnny. Of course only the imaginative mind of Cunningham could think of something so twisted. The DVD is scheduled to be released 5/23/05. Check out the official website.

How about a Thai cult film???

In the mood for a Spaghetti Western? How about a musical? A romantic tearjerker? Well you can have all of that in the Thai cult film, Fai Talai Jone also known as Tears Of The Black Tiger. With Citizen Dog now under his belt, Wisit Sasanatieng's first film is a memorable one.
It's raining steadily and a woman in a bright 1940s magenta dress is walking with an umbrella, across a wooden walk way in a picturesque green lotus-filled pond to a white gazebo that has a rooftop matching her dress. Meanwhile, two Cowboys are trying to get into a bungalow that has been raided with bad guys. The cowboys all of a sudden dash in, bullets start trailing them, and they eventually make it to the porch. Dum, dressed all in a black with a shoulder holster, draws and close-ups of his pistol are quickly cut in as he blast his way into one of the rooms only to spot a bad guy hiding behind a post through a mirror hanging right in front of him. Dum draws his pistol, but then decides to aim at something else, with the bullet ricocheting off a lantern, bucket, shovel, tool box, a dancing toy figure, a light fixture, eventually landing through the bad guy's forehead.
Too fast for you? Well, Sananatieng does us all a favor and shows everything in slow motion. With a well-developed plot line about the tortured romance of Dum and Rumpooey, scenes like this will lead viewers into wanting more. Visually ornamental with the highly stylized set design and stunning shots in pastel colors, stills from the film could pass as Monet paintings. Check out the screen shots and then try to get a hold of the film.
