Melting Snowman Canisters by Marcel Dzama

Marcel Dzama’s melting snowman canisters were inspired by a series of personal autobiographical drawings and paintings allegorically documenting his move to New York from Winnipeg. Three of the 4 ceramic snowmen have an airtight lid and are designed for storage of condiments or other products.

Marcel Dzama's humor has instantly generated a loyal fan club of admirers. Dzama depicts situations and characters whose strangeness are ripe for transformation and all are vaguely familiar. His world is full of symbolism, and despite the obviousness of the references and the humor with which they are supplied, it can get a little shadowy. Seen individually Dzama’s small and delicate drawings, hand-tinted with watercolor and root beer, have an eccentric aesthetic sensibility. The compositions of cartoon-ish creatures combine references that are at once intellectually highbrow and reminiscent of retro pop culture from the Roaring Twenties and the Fifties.

Marcel Dzama was born in 1974 in Winnipeg, Canada. He lives and works and in New York. Since graduating in 1997, Dzama has had numerous critically acclaimed solo shows in New York, London, Paris, Barcelona, Stockholm and Los Angeles, Dusseldorf, and Milan. He will have an exhibition in New York at the David Zwirner Gallery in Sept 05.
